Why Do I Have This Strange Website...
I love a good question, and I mean, really, why put all this work into some giant webpage that no one may ever read? Well, I was reading an article about Richard Feynman the other day, and they had a quote from him in his later years, shortly before his death from a long bout with cancer:
I hesitated. "I'm sad because you're going to die."
"Yeah," he sighed, "that bugs me sometimes too. But not so much as you think." And after a few more steps, "When you get as old as I am, you start to realize that you've told most of the good stuff you know to other people anyway."
And you know what? I'm not being morbid, and I certainly hope death is not that close, but one day, we all die. I am a follower of Jesus Christ, and as such, I believe it is my moral obligation to make the world a better place. I am also a member of the Order of the Engineer, and I quote the obligation I took when I joined it:
I am an Engineer, in my profession I take deep pride. To it I owe solemn obligations.
Since the Stone Age, human progress has been spurred by the engineering genius. Engineers have made usable Nature's vast resources of material and energy for Humanity's [Mankind's] benefit. Engineers have vitalized and turned to practical use the principles of science and the means of technology. Were it not for this heritage of accumulated experience, my efforts would be feeble.
As an Engineer, I pledge to practice integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect, and to uphold devotion to the standards and the dignity of my profession, conscious always that my skill carries with it the obligation to serve humanity by making the best use of Earth's precious wealth.
As an Engineer, in humility [and with the need for Divine guidance]*, I shall participate in none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given without reservation for the public good. In the performance of duty and in fidelity to my profession, I shall give the utmost.
So taking a long time to get back to that quote. My goal is to have told all my good stories when my time comes and hope that if nothing else, that makes the world a better place. And if I do that via the web, the printed word, or conversations with any and all who will listen, then so be it.

Useful Software
Return to topSome stuff I use a lot, need to have a nice collection of links to this stuff in one spot.
- Mozilla - My web browser of choice.
- Exodus Jabber Client - If you're going to IM, you should use an open standard. Other client options are available from the main Jabber site.
- WinAMP - I'm using an older copy, but one of the better ways to play MP3's under Windows. I'm willing to take alternate suggestions.
- MiKTeX - A TeX package for Windows.
- DevCPP - A nice Windows IDE that use MinGW for compiling.
- PuTTY - A good SSH client for Windows.
- Eudora - For the time being, I use Eudora for my email. I am likely to write my own soon...
- Subversion - You're still using CVS? How quaint.
- SciTE - Nice text editor for lots of stuff.
- Unison - I have 3 computers, and I use this to maintain a complete copy of my home directory on all 3 computers.
- Stair Dismount - Nice game.
Humor
Return to top- CapAlert - CAP Alert. "Christian" movie reviews. These guys are deadly serious... which is why their site is good for a few laughs. In their world, X-Men was all about homosexuality, and J.R.R. Tolkien is a pagan in disguise encouraging people to get into magic.
- Jack Chick - This guy is insane. Really, the ultimate example of a conspiracy theory nut with his own publishing house. He needs to spend some time with the cap-alert guys. For another view on Chick here's a good link: http://www.revolting.com/1.2/chick/chick.html
- Brunching Shuttlecocks - These guys are really warped. The Self-Made Critic is my personal favourite.
- Graduate Student Guide to automatic weapons - This is deranged. What's more disturbing perhaps, is that people aren't disturbed to hear that I think this is one of the funniest things I've read in a while :).
- The Opinion File - This guy is my hero really. This stuff is pure delight. I mean, from the twisted ideas about the French, to the sardonic comments on the South, its full of classic stuff.
- BBSpot - Warped computer news site, where the world first heard that Micro$oft purchased Evil from Satan. The geek horoscopes are rather fun too.
- Evil Overlord, Inc. - Planning your Future One Step at a Time - A "To do" list if you plan on taking over the world and maintaining your evil rule.
- The Spam Letters - What happens when you reply to spam? This guy started writing back to spammers. Some of this stuff is almost to good to be real.
- Confessions of an Arch wizard - This guy ran a MUD named MIST a long while back and modelled his management after a particularly twisted version of Machiavelli's "The Prince". Its almost like a tutorial on how to be twisted toward your players, he summed it up this, "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. I am the law!". Yeah, its pretty funny(unless you were one of his victims I guess :).
- "I have no idea what you're talking about... so here's a bunny with a pancake on its head.". Some people have too much time on their hands. I'm glad we have the internet to keep them occupied.
- The End of the World - A list of all the possiblities for the end of the world, along with some analysis on the likelihood of it happening and time frames.
